Aerial fiber optic cables are suspended from rods used in fiber optic cables. This laying method can use the original overhead open pole road, save the construction cost and shorten the construction period. Aerial optical cables are suspended from poles and need to adapt to various natural environments. Aerial fiber optic cables are vulnerable to natural disasters such as typhoons, snow and floods. They are also susceptible to external forces, and their mechanical strength is weakened. Therefore, the failure rate of overhead fiber optic cables is higher than that of buried and pipeline fiber optic cables. Usually used for long distances of two or less lines, suitable for dedicated network fiber optic cable lines or some local special parts.

There are two ways to install overhead/Aerial optical cables:

1: Suspension type: hang the wire on the pole, then hang the optical cable with the hook, and the optical cable load is carried by the hanging wire.

2: Self-supporting: An optical cable with a self-supporting structure, the optical cable is in the shape of “8”, the upper part is a self-supporting optical cable, and the load of the optical cable is carried by the self-supporting wire.

Buried fiber optic cable: external fiber optic cable or steel wire armor, directly buried in the ground, requiring resistance to external mechanical damage and soil erosion performance. Choose a different protective layer structure according to the environment and conditions of use, for example, insects and rodents in the area, use with the anti-insect ratchet-jacketed fiber optic cable. Depending on the soil and the environment, the cable buried underground is generally between 0.8 meters and 1.2 meters. When laying, care must also be taken to keep the fiber strain within the allowable range.

Duct fiber optic cable laying is generally in urban areas, and the environment for laying pipes is better, so there is no special requirement for the optical cable sheath, and no armoring is required. Before laying the length of the laying segment and the location of the connection point, the pipe laying must be selected. Laying can be done using mechanical bypass or manual traction. The pulling force does not exceed the allowable tension of the optical cable. Pipe production can be selected according to the geographical conditions of concrete, asbestos cement, steel pipe and plastic pipe.

The environmental conditions for laying underwater optical cables are much more serious than those for directly buried optical cables, and it is much more difficult to repair technical faults and measures. Therefore, the reliability requirements of underwater optical cables are also higher than those of direct buried optical cables. Submarine optical cables are also underwater optical cables, but the laying environment conditions are stricter than general underwater optical cables, and the service life of submarine optical cable systems and components is required to exceed 25 years.
