Former Junior Hockey player and captain of Kelowna Chiefs, Myles Mattila, honoured by the Government leaders for his work in advocating for Mental Health awareness with his nonprofit, MindRight for Athletes Society

Myles Mattila has continued to receive accolades from different quarters for his stand on mental health for athletes. Myles recently received an award from the Government leaders in recognition of his efforts toward advocating for Mental Health awareness through his nonprofit society, MindRight for Athletes Society, a Mental Health for Athletes Society. The charity was founded in 2019 to help put an end to mental health stigma and assist players with seeking necessary help needed to function optimally.

One of the major challenges faced by millions of athletes, both young and old, is effectively dealing with mental health issues. Athletes are celebrities and role models to many due to their popularity. However, they are humans and often have to deal with different types of personal issues. Unfortunately, the sporting world has seemingly failed in effectively addressing mental health issues and saving the careers of athletes. Myles is, however, looking to change this narrative by establishing MindRight for Athletes.

Mr. Mattila got involved in mental health advocacy at the tender age of 14 after observing that one of his teammates was struggling with some mental health issues and did not get the right treatment approach even from the team coach. Mattila took the bull by the horns, educating himself on mental health and eventually created the MindRight for Athletes Society.

Myles Mattila Accomplishment

Since the launch of the organization, Mattila and his team have dedicated all possible resources to promoting wellness and positive living by increasing community awareness of mental health while connecting young athletes to the needed mental health resources. In memory of the late GM Grant Sheridan, MindRight for Athletes Society has also created a Scholarship for Young athletes to encourage advancement in their education as well as sport. The annual $1,500 award is presented to a KIJHL player with proven strong community involvement and exhibits academic excellence and leadership qualities.

The remarkable feats achieved by Myles Mattila through MindRight for Athletes Society have deservedly attracted the attention of several well-meaning institutions. The B.C. Achievement Foundation’s Community Award established to celebrate extraordinary British Columbians contributing to building healthier communities throughout the province recently presented the B.C. Achievement Community Award to Myles Mattila. Mattila was one of the 25 recipients of this year’s prestigious B.C. Achievement Community Award for his mental health advocacy, concussion awareness, and civic engagement.

Myles Mattila through MindRight for Athletes Society has continued to wax more influential in mental health advocacy even as he focuses on completing his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a management specialty at the Okanagan College campus in Kelowna.
