The word “pit bull” is a bit of a misnomer, as it describes a type of dog and not an actual breed that is recognized by the American Kennel Club, the gold standard of dog breed belonging. There are several different bully-type and terrier breeds that the untrained eye of the general public automatically labels as a pitbull due to their broad skulls and muscular shape. Pitbull-type dogs have been given a bad reputation by the press and many people avoid them when seeking to find a new pet. In truth, most of the pitbulls make amazing family pets. Follow along and educate yourself about the different types of pitbull-type breeds.

American Staffordshire Terrier

The American Staffordshire Terrier, or “Am Staff” as it is affectionately known by those who love the breed, is a medium-sized dog with a broad skull and muscular build. Intelligent and perceptive, dogs of this breed typically want to be with their owners, doing what they do whenever possible. The Am Staff typically has a big personality, making it a genuinely fun dog to consider when thinking about pitbull adoption.

Bull Terrier

Bull Terriers are known as the “eggheads” of the dog world, not because they have serious personalities, but because of the shape of their heads. They’re far from serious and many of their owners think of them as having clownish, playful personalities. While Bull Terriers come in different colors. Most people are more familiar with white bull terriers, in case you desire a little bit of pitbull history, this is the result of the Spuds MacKenzie Bud Light mascot that was associated with Bud Light commercials in the late 1980s.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is the smallest of the breeds people recognize as a pitbull-type. Typically no taller than 16″ at the shoulder, these power-packed little dogs can weigh as much as 40 pounds of solid muscle. A Staffie that has been well-socialized with other dogs as a pup and humans makes an intelligent and devoted companion. They are friendly, affectionate, and many excel at dog sports such as obedience and barn hunt.

American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT)

Having said that Pitbulls are a type and not a breed is true so far as the AKC is concerned. However, other dog registries such as the United Kennel Club recognize the American Pit Bull Terrier as a unique breed type and maintain lineage records within its studbooks. This is the only true pitbull to those who consider themselves connoisseurs of the breed. It just isn’t AKC registered. These dogs get unfairly maligned, and it’s wonderful that there is now a pitbull charity that helps bring attention to dogs in need.

Perhaps at this very moment you are considering adopting a new dog to come and live with you and your family. Perhaps you’ve been looking at shelters, or at on-line breed rescues. It is your desire to give a deserving dog a home filled with love and proper care. If you are one of the many millions of people whose minds and homes are closed to pitbulls because of their reputation, consider going to meet a few. You might find yourself surprised. Pitbulls are some of the most plentiful and adoptable dogs out there, and the stigma that surrounds them needs to be changed. Open your mind to a pitbull adoption and you may find yourself blessed beyond belief as a result.
