Abrasive blasting is the general term applied to finishing processes that entail the high-pressure propulsion of a stream of abrasive material onto the surface of a workpiece. Abrasive blasting can serve many surface finishing purposes, such as removing contaminants or previous coatings, altering the shape and smoothing or roughening the surface.

There are many types of abrasive blasting applications, each of which requires the use of different types of blasting materials, referred to as blasting “media.” Teliday Hardware Products has assembled this blasting abrasives guide to help you select the most appropriate material for your specific finishing processes.

Glass Beads: Glass is not as aggressive a blasting media as other materials, such as steel shot or silicon carbide. However, it is an excellent choice for applications that require a softer, brighter finish. It is well suited for stainless steel applications. Glass beads can also be recycled multiple times.

Aluminum Oxide: Aluminum oxide is characterized by its superior hardness and strength. It can be found in applications ranging from anti-slip surfaces, industrial applications as a blasting media, and as a raw material in refractories. It is designed for abrasive pressure blasting of almost any type of substrate: glass, granite, marble, and steel. Due to its ability to deeply etch it is used in the preparation of surfaces prior to painting or coatings.

Garnet sands: Garnet is manufactured for waterjet cutting and sandblasting applications. Its natural, angular form makes it a popular abrasive. It is environmentally friendly and low-dusting, due to its durable crystalline structure. Garnet is perfect for tile cutting, counter tops, stone cutting, food processing equipment, glass cutting, Kevlar cutting, aluminum cutting, and stainless steel cutting.

Aluminum Oxide, Glass Bead, Garnet sands above are all some old medias for blasting. Maybe It could be time to upgrade your shot blasting experience to a highly durable media that will give you the finish you need without the dust and mess.

Today we will introduce you the Stainless Steel abrasives, which has been proven to be more durable and resistant to fracture than other blasting abrasives. This media will outlast Aluminum Oxide by 30x, Glass Bead by 50x, and Garnet by 60x.

What is Stainless steel shot and cut wire shot?

Stainless steel Shot and Cut Wire Shot are made of kinds of stainless steel wire or carbon steel wire and obtained by cutting wire into lengths equal to the wire diameter, and then making it round if necessary through the conditioning (rounding) process. The quality is assured in cut wire shot because the wire from which it has been produced is heat treated and cold drawn to achieve hardness and homogeneity, together with the balanced chemical properties and complete solidity of every piece, insure that stainless steel shot and cut wire shot will not fracture, break or powder while in use. During this process, they are obtained in 2 forms:

(a) As-Cut: Due to its sharp edge, it works good only for cleaning where speed of cleaning is critical and somewhat rough finish is acceptable. But not advisable to use for peening operation which can cause dent as they damage the fatigue life.

(b) Conditioned: As-Cut Shots when rounded off through a conditioning process. It is used more in the shot peening process; also in different industries such as automotive industry, aerospace industry, shipping industry, etc.

How about the performance of stainless steel shot and cut wire shot?

In the actual production, the stainless steel abrasives, including 410/430304/201/202 stainless steel shot and cut wire shot have been very widely used.

Firstly, After shot blasting or peening processes, these metals can show the original metal properties, look very bright, together with a matt effect of the surface.

Secondly, the use of spray processing after the work piece does not need to be pickling rust removal process, so it’s very energy saving and environmental protection.

Finally, stainless steel shot also have excellent wear resistance performance and significant advantage over other materials.

Stainless Steel Abrasives Advantages

Most economical and lowest consumption

Consumption 3-4 times less compare to cast shot

No dust formation

Faster cleaning

Environmental friendly

Uniform hardness

Stabilized grain size

Increased fatigue life of blasted parts

In short, the material can be regarded as the best choice of abrasive to remove the oxide skin, deburr, and surface without defects.

Teliday Hardware Products offers stainless steel shot and cut wire shot manufactured from high quality stainless steel wire that meets industry standards, including SEA J441 and AMS 2431. Cut wire is available in Stainless steel alloys, Carbon steel alloys, Aluminum, Zinc and Copper alloys with a range of sizes and hardness. G1, G2 and G3 conditioned wire media is available.
